Death in the Family
- Experiencing a death in the family can be an emotional and stressful time. Access free, confidential counseling through the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).
- Kaiser members can access virtual behavioral health resources including Ginger, Calm, and myStrength through the Kaiser Health & Wellness pages for Southern California and Northern California.
- Review the company’s bereavement and personal leave policies.
Learn more about benefit actions you can take in the event of a death. - Update your dependents and/or benefits coverage, if necessary, within 31 days.
- Update your life insurance, Health Savings Account (HSA), and retirement plan beneficiaries if necessary.
- Submit a life insurance claim for the Spouse or Child life coverage (if you elected these).
- Contact the Social Security Administration to end benefits received by the deceased (if disabled or retired) and to determine if benefits are available to the surviving spouse and dependent children.
- Update your direct deposit and/or tax withholding.
- Update your will. MetLife can provide assistance if you are enrolled in the legal plan.
- If your dependent was covered under the spouse / child supplemental life, MetLife provides assistance with settling an estate. You can also get funeral assistance.
