It’s important to plan for your family’s financial security in case the unexpected happens. That’s why Western Digital provides basic life insurance and accidental death and dismemberment (AD&D) insurance for employees — at no cost to you.

During Open Enrollment, you also have the option of buying supplemental life and AD&D insurance for yourself and your family through easy payroll deductions.

In addition, you have the protection of company-paid business travel accident insurance.


Basic Life and AD&D Insurance

Western Digital provides Basic Life and AD&D insurance to assist you and your family in the event of a death or dismemberment. These benefits are fully paid by the company.

You have the option of:

  • 2 times your annual salary, up to a maximum of $1,000,000*
  • $50,000

*The IRS requires that the value of any group-term life insurance greater than $50,000 be included in your taxable income. This is known as Imputed Income. The value will be listed on your paycheck as "Group Term Life (Sec 125)" and is not a deduction from your pay. The IRS determines the value of your life insurance based on your age. See Page 15 here for more information. 

What is AD&D insurance?

Should you lose your life, sight, hearing, speech, or use of your limb(s) in an accident, AD&D insurance provides additional benefits to help keep your family financially secure. AD&D benefits are paid as a percentage of your coverage amount — from 50% to 100% — depending on the type of loss.


Supplemental Life and AD&D Insurance

You can purchase Supplemental Life Insurance for yourself from 1X to 8X your annual earnings (up to $3M). You can also purchase Voluntary AD&D for yourself from 1x to 8x your annual earnings (up to $2M).  Life insurance changes can only be made within 31 days of hire, during Open Enrollment, or within 31 days of an IRS Qualifying Status Change. Certain life insurance amounts may require completion of an electronic Statement of Health, and/or medical review, and approval by MetLife. 

Family Life and AD&D

  • Spouse/Domestic Partner Life and AD&D — You may purchase life and/or AD&D insurance for your spouse or domestic partner up to the following amounts:
    • Spouse/Domestic Partner Life — $300,000 (not to exceed 50% of your Basic and Supplemental coverage).
    • Spouse/Domestic Partner AD&D — 60% of your Voluntary AD&D coverage - not to exceed $1.2M.
  • Child Life Insurance — Choice of $5,000 or $10,000 of Child life insurance (covered from birth through age 26).
Evidence of insurability

Life insurance over a certain amount may require evidence of insurability (EOI). After electing coverage, you will receive more information if EOI is required.


Business Travel Accident Insurance

When traveling on behalf of the company, be assured you are protected under a company-paid business travel accident insurance policy should an accident occur. This policy provides coverage for certain injuries or death resulting from an accident during business travel outside of your home country.

You are covered for five times your annual base salary, up to a maximum benefit of $2M. Coverage is automatic — you do not need to enroll, and there is no cost to you.

Have you named a beneficiary?
